25th Anniversary

Commemorating the 25th Anniversary (2022) of the Chiropractic Diplomatic Corps, a Canadian NGO with a registered branch in the Philippines and a formal affiliation with Chiropractic India.

Reflecting on 1997, it was noticed that there was little available information about the presence of chiropractic around the world. Chiropractors looking to fulfill a greater purpose and wishing to contribute to the advancement of the profession had few resources available. Two trends of note at that time were the greater ease of travel from country to country. Second, the 1990s spawned a growing internet capability that greatly improved International communications. This new combination permitted our well-traveled volunteer chiropractors to build a deep knowledge base on the presence of the fledgling chiropractic profession outside of Western nations. Please review this summary of the CDC-Chiro’s focused activities over the past twenty-five years. The knowledge and contacts acquired have contributed to our future-focused development of chiropractic training programs in poorer nations.

Early years ‘97-98 Brainstorming between the founding DCs, sharing their observations, and building a baseline awareness of the growth trends within the profession in various countries. Honoring our founding directors: Dr. Michel Tetrault, Dr. David Vickerman (RIP), Dr. Gary Auerbach, Dr. Joe Teal, and Dr. Hubert Fouasse (RIP).
1998 – 1999 Development of a comprehensive website that grew to some 300 pages on the collected information.  Of note is the Foreign Service Registry.
The website was also interactive with DCs interested in foreign practice and in reporting advancements in various countries on their chiropractic story.
1999 Met with many pioneer DCs while attending the WFC Assembly in Auckland NZ, hearing their stories and concerns on how to get assistance on their efforts at formal professional recognition. Read feedback from the Pros & Cons of Pioneering Chiropractic.  Observing the WFC in action and making notes on its capabilities to support and find where else to contribute.
2000 1. Met with many faculty and college administrators while attending the WFC Educational Conference. Starting to form an understanding of what was working and what wasn’t in opening new DC schools. Sorting challenges of the Institutional bias and limitations we see in expanding education globally.
2. Established DC departments in Rural Community and Native Health Clinics in the USA, even to the present day, where over 1,5 million laborers/families have access to DC care under Medicaid. Sadly, we did not find the same success in Canada for either Rural or Aboriginal services.
2001 Learned the ropes of what the chiropractic profession can do within the UN while attending the WHO Assembly in Geneva, the first of many visits to this annual gathering of the world’s Ministers of Health. Meetings with UNESCO in Paris to investigate opportunities for Chiropractic Education and Science advancement. Interesting read on Chiropractic in WHO and also the WHO Snapshot of Chiropractic in C.A.M.
2002 1. Producing the “White Paper” on the development of the Chiropractic profession titled the “Global Professional Strategy” or GPS. Nine well-drafted chapters on the culmination of the CDC directors’ accumulated knowledge and experiences to date. Expanding the CDC website information base.
2. Collaboration with a USA NGO in establishing a chiropractic clinic in St. Elizabeth Hospital in St. Petersburg, Russia. An in-depth project to lay the foundation for the eventual introduction of a formal chiropractic education program that would be compatible with the Russian Higher Education system. (see Russia articles)
2003 Expanded the newsletter “The Chiropractic Advocate”, providing more real-time information and updates, often with professional development topics and updates on the profession’s advancements. (Read 29 Articles)
2004 Initiated a collaboration with the Bangalore City Health Initiative with an NGO introduction by WHO staff. An on-the-ground exchange of knowledge and experiences that paved the way for years of interaction and networking to gain friends in important circles interested in the establishment of several chiropractic programs in India. (see our India pages and Photos)
2004 to 2005 SE Asia touring and meeting with local DC pioneers. Learning about their challenges and successes with their practices and the difficulties in forming a National DC Association. Issues between indigenous and foreign DCs are not uncommon as more foreign chiropractors relocate abroad and reveal mixed priorities in both groups.
2006 to 2019 and ongoing Having already acquired so much information on the development of chiropractic abroad, the work continued in sharing that knowledge with thousands of chiropractors and assisting hundreds of foreign-minded DCs in their efforts to successfully practice abroad. Our founding President, Dr. Tetrault, seeded several Asian countries with some 20 clinics to serve and leverage this on-the-ground presence to advance the recognition of the Chiropractic profession in these nations. Established partnerships with Chiropractic patients to support their local Chiropractic clinics for sustainability.  (see non-Chiropractor Actors)
2017 This 20th anniversary marks the pivot point in the prioritization of the CDC on the establishment of a Regional Strategic Plan to put together a system that works in developing countries, where earlier attempts by twinning DC institutions of the West faltered. (see Greenhouse Project)
2020 to 2022 The pandemic essentially shut down all diplomatic travel. Only online recruitment, placement, and efforts to sustain existing clinics took priority. This time was dedicated to retooling and building systems that support the education package needed to administer the strategic plans that will establish several chiropractic programs in target nations. Fruits to bear out soon. Globalizing Chiropractic Schools Part 1 and Part 2
2022 our 25th The CDC Board has been expanded, and with the formation of an Advisory Panel, we seek to attract more technical and capable people toward the priority of establishing more chiropractic programs. Our primary focus is to assist in establishing a regional strategy for chiropractic colleges in underserved nations. Also introduced our advanced development themes:
a) Philippines Chiropractic College at the University of Makati
b) Public Relations Posture Pageant International theme

Chiropractic – treatment without drugs

Chiropractic – treatment without drugs

At the end of May in St. Elizabeth’s hospital there was International Symposium on Chiropractic. Chiropractic for our specialists is a new concept, but in the West chiropractic treatments are widely used and are popular among people. In the USA, the doctor of chiropractic is as widespread a profession as a stomatologist (dentist) is here. American chiropractors Michel Tetrault, Sherry Durrett, Clifton Bethel, Dwight Whynot, DCs, participating in this symposium told our medics about the profession of chiropractic, it’s global perspectives, about the main techniques of this profession, and about the diagnostic and treatments of diseases with chiropractic methods.

What is chiropractic? As the chiropractic specialists say themselves chiropractic is an art, science and philosophy. Approach in treatment of the patients is carried out through its effect on the spine. Chiropractic has existed since 1895. Its founder – Canadian doctor D.D. Palmer, who lived in the 19th century, understood that impingement of the nerves can be corrected by an adjustment of the spine. Pinched nerves weaken our immune system; bring about disorganization of the processes in the organism and consequently disease. Very often displacement of the spine exists imperceptibly and slowly breaks down our health. The goal of chiropractic is the correction of the spine and removal the impingement of the nerves by the safe and effective method known as “treatment by hands” without the usage of drugs and surgery. After adjustment the displaced vertebra returns to its correct position and provides for normal neural processes. This allows one to reach the maximum effect of recovery because it is the nervous system that governs all the functions of our organism. Thus, specialist chiropractors remove the cause of disease, not just the symptoms, and the foundation of chiropractic is the utilization of inner resources of the organism of the person. Objectivity of the methods of chiropractic is confirmed by many researches. With chiropractic methods, different diseases can be treated especially related to weakened immunity including flu and other infections, allergy, epilepsy, heart pain, gastrointestinal upset, etc. As the chiropractic specialists state it is one of the most powerful and effective methods nowadays.

Chiropractic also works with children. They consider that a full examination of the spine is necessary for every newborn baby. Children who are under chiropractic treatment tend to be sick less and bear illness easily, less often are behind in emotional and mental development. Even elderly people need chiropractic monitoring. When chiropractic removes or lessens pinched nerves, all life-support resources increase that then helps one to cope with illness.

Education of chiropractic doctors is as thorough as any other medical education. When entering college, students of chiropractic undergo a 4 year course of education that is a bit longer than in other medical colleges. They study disorders of adults and pediatrics as well. After the students acquire necessary knowledge in early stage, they then start learning specialized subjects. These include: theory and practice, chiropractic diagnosis, different techniques of correction that are not taught in other medical fields. Before getting the diploma students have to get 900 hours of practice in clinics. As they do not need to spend time on studying pharmacology or surgery, they are given additional training on anatomy, nutrition, diagnostics, including palpation, x-rays diagnostics, labs and different techniques of correction. After the completion of studies, including boards, they have to pass exams on practice and have an interview which is held by the Council of Chiropractors of the State in this particular state where he wants to get a license.

This profession exists in 104 countries. All over the world 75 thousand licensed chiropractors work. In 3 countries -USA, Canada, Australia- this profession has steadily occupied its niche, is very popular and is of great demand among population. In the USA, there is a tendency among people with higher education, adherents of less aggressive methods of treatment, to first turn to chiropractors (without the referral of the doctor) instead of buying the drugs. The majority of Russian medical doctors of traditional medicine do not know anything about chiropractic. The goal of symposium is to bring the information of this new profession to our doctors. Who knows? maybe in the future in Russia patients will be able to be treated without drugs.

Exploratory Voyage

1-1In June 2004, three pioneering spirits Sherry Durrett DC, LCP (hon), joined by Mark DeEulio, and Larry Berg set out on a trip to Russia to see what needed to be done to help expand Chiropractic there.

What these three have in common is a strong passion for the expansion of Chiropractic and David Singer Enterprises. Mr. DeEulio is a professional speaker for the Masters Club, an elite group of clients within David Singer Enterprises. Dr. Durrett is also a speaker for DSE, as well as a client in the Masters Club program. And, Mr. Berg is a member of the Masters Club as well.

These three traveled to Moscow and St. Petersburg spending time meeting with governmental officials, opinion leaders, doctors, and the one known Chiropractor practicing in Moscow, Dr. Charles Register, Life Graduate.

Dr. Durrett, Dr. Register, Larry Berg, and Mark DeEulio visited Dr. Vladimir Molodetskikh, Professor at Moscow State Medical and Dental University, and Dr. Andre’ Molodetskikh MD trained in upper cervical specific work by Dr. Kale over 11 years ago.

According to Dr. Durrett, there is a very strong interest in Chiropractic and other forms of alternative healing there in Russia. This interest is expressed strongly by all MDs that were met with as well as the public that was surveyed overall.

1-3Dr. Register, Dr. Alexiy Samorykov, MD, PhD, a chief at the Scientific Research Center for Rehabilitative Medicine of Russia, Dr. Durrett, and another MD, Dr. Samorykov’s assitant.

Much help will be needed on this project. If you have any interest in possibly practicing in Russia or in going to Russia to teach, please contact Dr. Durrett at drdurrett@msn.com.

1-2In meetings, it was discussed how President Putin was concerned about the low health index, as well as the short life span of the Russian citizens. The plan to bring Chiropractic wide-spread to their country will help with these concerns.

The plans for this country would be to open Chiropractic clinics to start getting the awareness up about what Chiropractic is and helping educate the public about Chiropractic, as well as to open a school to train Chiropractors in their country.

(right)Dr. Durrett presents Dr. Vladimir Kurashvili with a copy of a book as Dr. Charles Register looks on.

“I don’t think that the citizens or the older MDs there are completely brain washed by drug advertising like they are here, or at least not yet to the extent Americans are. I think it will be a race though because I did see some signs of drug advertising. It is just nothing like it is here. If we hurry and get a foothold in and educate the people there about true health and the benefits of Chiropractic, hopefully their culture will not follow in America’s footsteps regarding viewpoints on health.” Dr. Durrett

1-5Eugenia, translator and representative from Hubbard College of Administration, Moscow Dr. Durrett and Dr. Larisa Berdnikova, gynecologist from St. Petersburg. Dr. Berdnikova had a strong desire to help with the Chiropractic project and plans to open a natural birthing center in St. Petersburg. It will be one of the first of its kind.
